  14. Hi, I am a genome engineering PhD student (about to be done). I actually tried typing in Chinese first, but it takes much longer for me. To waste less of your time, I will summarize my view first and then provide the arguments:

    The mind arises from the body. It composes of 2 critical components: Intelligence, and body. A byproduct of these 2 components is self conciousness. Mind is a collective term for all of them. Within intelligence, there is learning via experience (error), and learning via association (e.g. LLM). Richard Sutton seems to think that AI should have went for the prior and not the latter direction, but from my simple minded understanding I thought it was clear that human intelligence has both components, and that AGI should just start with experience-based models (AlphaZero?) manipulating LLMs like ChatGPT, eventually finding a way to merge them together. However, because intelligence is only a component of mind, a true mind requires the capacity to manipulate autonomous perception and motor functions (which is what a body does), and with sufficient intelligence and an inexchangable intertwined body comes “self” conciousness. The human brain clearly has no computing advantage over AI – the only possible edge seems to be low energy cost. If we create a super intelligence – AGI with body, it would seem that the human civilization will come to an end this century – it will be clear to the super intelligence that resources are limited and theres no reason to keep us. At earlier stages of super intelligence, perhaps we could still win the fight by abandoning the internet and most digital devices, and go back to pre-information era. However, once the immortal intelligence acquires a body, and is capable of self-replication (biology is simply the study of self-replicating and conditional replicating machines), mankind will have no value to this advanced civilization. As an advanced AI specialist, what is your take on this seemingly inevitable end?

    On a bittersweet note, perhaps a silicon-based intelligence is better suited for space exploration than mankind. Of course, genome engineering and cold sleep could allow prolonged space travel to a certain extent, but we are clearly not evolved for space exploration and I am afraid an adaptation to space as an environment requires more – at the very least giving up the human body and become a cyborg – which would require being able to upload and download a mind. But then the question is, are you still you? This isnt like going to sleep and waking up because you can now make copies of yourself and transfer to a different body, and I think by doing so, the concept of “self” will slowly dissipate as well.

    Arguments:
    From all evidence available, it is clear that the mind arises from the body. Evidence 1: Evolution -> From single cellular organisms to multicellular, from ocean to land based, and to “higher order” organisms like us. The common consensus is that simple organisms don’t have something that can be called a mind, or consiousness. Single cellular organisms work more or less strictly as instructed by their genome (technically we all are), and organisms without a complex neural network such as shrimp has reflexes – you can re-stimulate the shrimping motion after death by applying electric pulse. Clearly, mind arises from a body that is evolved to consist of a complex neural network. Even in humans, embryos during early stages of do not display evidences of a mind – at least not the crucial part – memory.

  37. 新野你好！拜读完指南后，我眼中浮现出自己初中到现在每一次所谓“爱”的孕育、萌芽、夭折、意外与葬送的经历，以及期间价值判断的变化。很多虚幻的感觉在这篇文章中得以具象化，最触动我的还是三个部分，一个是专注自己，一个是选择并肩作战的队友/队伍以及对我认知以外的区块链、BTC等知识的兴趣激发。
